63 letters to Townshend in Ireland, describing at length political and parliamentary affairs and gossip in London. Townshend was Lord Lieutenant (i.e. Viceroy) of Ireland 1767-1772, and much of the correspondence concerns royal, military, political, and parliamentary affairs in Ireland and in London, including deaths, appointments, elections, promotions, and rumors. One letter, dated 1770 Dec 19 mentions an illness of the King [George III] and a treatment of bloodletting. Beyond official matters, Smith alludes to an ongoing personal friendship between Townshend and himself, and mentions his own service in Portugal and his promotions, and the letters imply Townshend's influence in Smith's advancement. Over the course of the correspondence, Townshend's annotations refer to Smith as Major, General, Col., and Lt. Col.
